I was so honoured to be accepted into this pioneering course run by the expertise of Paula Garfield (Deafinitely Theatre) and Jenny Sealey (Graeae) at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and to be joined by familiar faces far and wide during our course.
In the 5 days that followed, this intensive course was packed with skills and practice, it was fantastic to work with such talented and creative theatre makers, and couldn’t have come at a better time for me educationally, as I had completed the first year of my Drama Degree at York St John as the first Deaf student they had, and desperately was missing instruction from other Deaf acting specialists, that would help me develop as a Deaf artist - this course was a huge encouragement, and bonding experience for us all.
Some examples of what we covered:
Translating Written English to BSL (Using the play: Bull by Mike Bartlett) - Led by Paula Garfield
Warming up and preparation for acting - Led by Jenny Sealey
Visual Vernicular Practical & Experimentation - led by Ciaran O'Breen & Paula Garfield
Exploring differences between: Acting for Screen and Acting for Theatre
Performing Bull (by Mike Bartlett) as a group, and acting on directing feedback given by Jenny Sealey, and Paula Garfield.
(and much, much, more)
